The Sacramento Republic soccer team is hoping to play its home games in an expanded stadium next summer.

Republic FC currently plays at 8,000 seat Bonney Field at Cal Expo. The Cal Expo board will consider, at its board meeting scheduled for Dec. 12, expanding Bonney Field by up to 4,000 seats.

A news release from the team Tuesday stated, “Sacramento Republic FC tentatively anticipates a capacity of approximately 10,500 for 2015” but suggests that is subject to change.

Pending approval and construction issues, Bonney Field could eventually reach 12,000 seats.

Republic FC would like to begin the expansion project in January of 2015 so the facility is ready for the team’s first home game sometime in mid to late March of next year.

Republic FC continues its push to gain a Major League Soccer franchise for Sacramento. The league indicated today it will probably make a decision by July of 2015 on expansion. The league commissioner said MLS could add one or two teams.

There are currently four cities hoping for a team: Sacramento, Miami, Las Vegas and Minneapolis.
