Warmer Rains Melt Sierra Snow

DONNER SUMMIT-

Warmer rains in the first week of December actually melted some of the Sierra's much-needed snow.

"There was a lot more snow up here recently, but it's just warm and the rain is just melting everything away," Jesse Churchill of Nevada City said.

Caltrans says its prepared for the wetter roads that some with the rain and melting snow.

"It started to rain west of the summit," Caltrans Superintendent Dave Wood said. "It adds to the mass and to the density. The snow is like a sponge. It sucks up a lot of water before it breaks up."
