Piece by piece, UC Davis crews worked through the morning removing a 50-foot-tall pine tree.

One campus employee was working inside the Academic Technologies Services building when the tree uprooted and came tumbling down.

"He described it like a great big giant walking across the building that decided to sit down. At that point the ceiling dropped a foot and the rest is history," Catherine Olvera, with the Academic Technology Services Department, said.

That employee slipped and fell while running from the area.

Around 35 employees were temporarily displaced.

The building houses audio visual equipment for classrooms.

UC Davis doesn't think any of their equipment was damaged, but won't know until they're allowed back inside the building.

Crews shut down part of Hutchison Drive during clean up.
