SACRAMENTO-

An off-duty Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy was attacked outside his home Tuesday night by several people.

According to department spokesperson Sgt. Lisa Bowman, the deputy was unloading his personal car when he noticed illegal fireworks being shot off down the street and landing on roofs.

Bowman says the deputy showed the people his badge and asked them to stop. He was then attacked by four or five people, investigators say.

Deputies arrived to the scene and took 42-year-old Richard Griffen into custody while the others ran into a house.

There was a brief standoff but no other arrests. Sheriff’s investigators say they know who the “main suspect” is and will detain him soon.
