Three horses, killed in a large barn fire near Modesto, are being mourned by the family who owns the land.

Friday night, flames ripped through Ignacio Rios' barn. Friends tried to save the show stallions, but it was too late. The horses were stuck in the stable as flames engulfed the barn along McReynolds Road.

The owner was out of town when the fire started, his family headed for safety, and said they could hear the horses as the fire grew.

Three horses died in the fire.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Investigators believe the fire was accidentally set, but have not said what the official cause is.
