A deputy’s car was engulfed in flames Tuesday afternoon on the Cap City Freeway near Exposition Boulevard, with ammunition reportedly going off inside.

According to the CHP, both directions of the freeway were shut down.

The fire was put out fairly quickly. More ammunition was found inside the car.

The CHP did not say if anyone was hurt.

Westbound lanes were reopened shortly after 3 p.m. and eastbound lanes were reopened a short time later, but traffic congestion was expected to last through the rest of the afternoon.
