Stockton Police investigators are now calling a baby's death suspicious after a man found her in a dumpster at a Stockton apartment complex.
Detectives are now focusing on finding the baby's mother.
Monday, FOX40 spoke with those who saw the baby for themselves in the dumpster. People have been placing candles, stuffed animals, and notes.
"We named her Heaven," Johnny Garibay told FOX40.
Garibay, along with other Louis Park Estates Apartment residents found the lifeless body of a baby in a dumpster Sunday.
"It was a newborn baby that was still wrapped in its umbilical cord and all the placenta and everything of the baby," he explained.
A Stockton Police Department spokesperson confirmed the baby was a girl, developed about 6 months.
"But, definitely, we want to figure out who the mother is and go out and figure out exactly what happened," Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva said.
Authorities are also working on finding out how long the baby had been dead. The autopsy results show the death as suspicious.
"I started crying. I couldn’t help… I try to hold back the tears," Garibay said.
The harsh reality of what happened marked by candles and thoughts of where she may be now.
"She deserves to at least have a name, so we named her ‘Heaven’ because we know that’s where she’s going," Garibay told FOX40.
It is a misdemeanor to dispose of human remains.
Because the coroner has deemed the death suspicious, the mother may be facing homicide charges.
