When he showed up at the doors of the Calvary Christian Center on Del Paso Boulevard, people here say they knew Paul Nelson wasn't in his right mind.
"I saw him bowing down in front of the doors like an idol," said Ernesto Martinez.
So they did what they do at this church. They tried to help. They tried to pray with him.
"He was like this. He was a mile a minute,” Martinez said.
It wasn't long after that Police say Nelson's odd behavior took a dangerous turn.
"We're talking younger than 7. So these kids weren't very heavy. You could easily pick them up if you were a good sized adult,” said Sacramento Police Officer Justin Brown.
"One of the sisters runs in and says 'He tried to kidnap my kid. He tried to kidnap my kid' and she's hysteric,” said Steve Reyes.
Police say Nelson grabbed two children and tried to walk off. But he didn't get far before the congregation put down their prayer books and went after him.
It took five of them, but they got Nelson under control until police could get there
“When I looked at his face as all five of them were holding him down, I could tell... this man is wild. He was crazy. He was out of his mind,” Reyes said.
Terrifying moments for two children and their parent in broad daylight, at a church. But once police had Nelson was secured, one of those parents had a final message for him.
"She went up to the window when they had him in the back of the car, and she goes 'I forgive you,'" Reyes said.
“You've got to forgive him, man. You've got to. We've got no choice,” said Reyes.
