A Carmichael man who shot and killed his girlfriend on New Year’s Day was sentenced Wednesday.

Steven Michael Lucas, 24, is now serving five years probation after pleading  guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Lucas said he accidentally killed his girlfriend, Kayley Leavitt, while firing a celebratory pistol shot on New Year’s Day.

The couple had a child together.

Leavitt’s family asked for leniency from the judge, saying her death was a tragic accident.

If Lucas violates his probation, he could face up to 14 years in prison.
