Sacramento Metro Fire crews battled a two alarm fire near the Sailor Bar area in Fair Oaks on Wednesday evening.

The fire burned near several homes on Bluff Lane off Hazel Avenue just after 6 p.m. The Sacramento Metro Fire Department said the homes were threatened by the blaze.

One resident was seen spraying hose water from his back porch at the flames to keep them at bay. One house sustained minor damage to the deck.

A National Guard helicopter could be seen making water drops on the flames.

Two homes were evacuated, according to the fire department. But residents were allowed to return home later in the evening.

The cause of the fire is unknown. However, law enforcement was called to the scene because of  possible suspicious activity related to the fire.

Witness Marvin Arnold said the fire started down by the American River, and not just in one place.

" I think it's arson. I really do. It was in three different spots down there," he said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire at about 15 acres.
