SACRAMENTO —

Crews in Downtown Sacramento are waiting to battle an underground transformer fire.

Heavy smoke was first reported in the Midtown area in the late evening Sunday. They eventually located the smoke coming from underneath the sidewalk on the corner of 21st and O Streets.

Upon discovery of the transformer, crews realized they would not be able to get to the fire immediately due to potential hazards with the electricity.

SMUD says it will take about 40 minutes for technicians to get to the transformer and turn it off.

People are advised to avoid the area due to the heavy smoke and potentially dangerous conditions.

FOX40 will have more on this story as it develops.
