It was hard to find standing space at the Shady Lady Saloon last year after Esquire magazine named it one of the best bars in America.

Since it's up for an even bigger honor this month, you may want to visit now.

They don't take reservations.

As a bartender drops a thick strip of orange peel in the Shady Lady's 'Jameson and the Giant Peach' drink, he's giving customers a taste of what made the place a spirited stand-out in the 9th Annual national Spirited Awards.

More than 2,000 nominees poured in for the 16 categories featured in this major industry competition.

It's directed by 'Tales of the Cocktail' and sponsored by the likes of Bacardi USA, Beefeater, Courvoisier and Rums of Puerto Rico.

As the entrant list has been whittled down, the Shady Lady has landed among the top 10 nominees chosen for the 'Best American High Volume Cocktail Bar' category.

The local folks who love this place say they aren't surprised it's the only Nor-Cal spot up against three nominees from New York, three from Chicago, two from L.A. and one from Vegas.

The final four nominees for each category will be announced June 16.
