SACRAMENTO --

A man who tried swimming across the American River, was caught in the currents and almost drowned today. Witnesses say the man got tired, then eventually panicked and called for help.

When people jumped into save him, the man's thrashing overwhelmed the rescuers.

"My brother and my husband decided to jump in and try to save him, but he wouldn't relax. He was pushing them. He was resisting," says Karleen Koi, a witness of the incident.

But there was no lack of good Samaritans sunning themselves in this park on the shores of the American River today. A second wave of rescuers jumped in to save the first rescuers and the drowning man.

Two men were transported to the hospital and both are expected to survive.
