Firefighters fighting the Kyburz fire caught a break Friday afternoon when temperatures dropped and the wind died down in the El Dorado National Forest.

By 5:30pm, Cal Trans reopened one lane of highway 50 and all mandatory evacuations were lifted. With help from Cal Fire crews, the U.S. Forest Service began focusing on the south side of highway 50 as the fire slowly moved east.

"We need to make sure any snags in the road are secured" U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Genevieve Villamaire told FOX40 Friday, adding that crews are working to cut down trees and mitigate any hazards.
