Man Steals Police Vehicle During Traffic Stop

On Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m., officers were doing a probation search of a car when an uninvolved male suspect got in their unmarked patrol car and began to drive away.

The suspect, 26-year-old Julio Ortega, dragged an officer a short distance after he attempted to reach through the window to try and stop the suspect.

The officer sustained minor injuries after the incident.

Dispatch was able to use GPS to track the vehicle. They located it parked near the intersection of Harris and Elm Streets.

The Ortega was still on the scene.

Officers were able to respond and safely detain the him.

Further investigation proved the Ortega had outstanding warrants out of the bay area.

He was booked for multiple charges including resisting arrest, carjacking and several outstanding warrants at the Sacramento County Main Jail.
