A somber salute; a final goodbye to Gary Kuntz.

He was a sheriff to the community, a friend to many and 'grandpa' to Anthony Flores.

"I always thought he was invincible, but no one's invincible. But he was just a great person, always the center of attention," Flores said.

Kuntz died of a heart attack last week.

Friday his life of service was celebrated by loved ones, fellow members of law enforcement and friends.

"The sheriff, he was a wonderful man," said Kuntz' friend Tom Lindow.

Affectionately called 'the people's sheriff.' Kuntz spent three decades with the Calaveras County Sheriff's department.

He's remembered as an inspiration and an approachable leader with a great sense of humor.

"He pushed people around him in order to bring them up and he was always somebody I could look up to," said Kuntz' nephew, Sean Newby.

Kuntz leaves behind a longtime partner, three children and nine grandchildren.
