It has been a problem in Janet Regnell's house since she moved to California, "Basically, it's the taste that turned me off... [the water] tastes like metal," she told FOX40 Friday.
Her solution is common in Davis — she only drinks bottled water.
Regnell is one of nearly 65,000 residents who has Chromium 6 in her tap water. Chrome 6 is a naturally occurring metal present in the soil (and well water) in both Davis and Woodland.
In early November, the City of Davis issued the second quarterly notice this year required by the state, to its customers. The notice explains that the state standard of Chromium 6 in water is 10 parts per billion (PPB). In Davis, 35% of the wells have Chromium 6 levels of about 14-37 parts per billion. However, city officials say most of their 65,000 customers are affected since the water is blended together.
The notice to resident was attached to their bill and states, "There is not an immediate risk. However, some people who drink water containing hexavalent chromium in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer."
Congressman John Garamendi, who has Davis in his district, assures residents that a solution is on the way and it includes a $228 million dollar water treatment plant for residents of Davis, Woodland and the UC Davis Campus.
"Davis and Woodland have taken a very important and significant step to solve the problem." Garamendi told FOX40 Friday.
When the treatment plant is complete in 2016, officials say residents will have surface water coming out of their faucets from the Sacramento River. The water will meet the new state standard.
Meanwhile, in Rio Linda, a solution is not on the horizon. The water distributed by the Rio Linda Elverta Community Water District currently does not meet the new state standard.
District officials are struggling to come up with a remaining $400,000 for their own water treatment plant. Rio Linda is eligible for state funding and district officials say they will enter a bid for the grant in January of 2016.
