SACRAMENTO–

Sacramento is getting its own professional rugby team, the Professional Rugby Organization announced Tuesday.

The club has yet to be named, but it will play at Bonney Field for at least two years.

“Sacramento’s support of USA and international rugby games during the California State Fair proved that there is strong demand for professional competition in the Sacramento region,” PRO Rugby CEO Douglas Schoninger said in a news release.

Bonney Field also plays host to the Sacramento Republic FC, though plans for a larger stadium are in the works.

PRO Rugby says a contest will be launched soon to pick the team’s name. Its first game will be in April.
