In just two days Modesto’s downtown ice rink will officially be open to the public.

On Thursday night, about 200 people got the chance to hit the ice before they officially opened.

A VIP event marked the "Modesto on Ice" rink coming to 11th and K streets.

Organizers told FOX40 they’ve been working on the project since January and got the green light from city council in September.

To date, 70 birthday parties have been booked as well as fundraising events for nonprofit groups, according to Andrea Murray.

Murray said the location for the ice rink was her favorite place because of the revitalization that’s taking part in Downtown Modesto.

“We want Modesto, downtown Modesto, you know, to be a place that families want to come. You skate and then you watch a movie, or you skate and you shop, or you skate and get a beauty treatment … whatever,” said Murray, who is a co-owner of "Modesto on Ice."

The skating rink’s ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Saturday morning, and it will be open every day, including holidays, until January 24. After that, the skating rink will transform back into a parking lot.

The city agreed to a four-year contract for the downtown event. For ticket information, visit: http://www.modestoonice.com
