A big rig crash on I-5 near Seamas Avenue in South Sacramento caused all northbound lanes and one southbound lane to be shut down on Thursday.

The accident happened just after 6 a.m. when a Fed Ex truck hit the center median and hit a pickup driving the opposite direction. The driver of the pickup, an Elk Grove man, was killed instantly, CHP said.

Caltrans reported a seven-mile traffic backup because of the crash, and urged drivers to take an alternate route.

The highway is expected to reopen after 7 p.m.
