An Elk Grove family is mourning the loss of their 12-year-old son who died Friday night during a basketball practice.

The Elk Grove Unified School District said the young man was a 7th grade student at Toby Johnson Middle School. He was taking part in a basketball practice at Joseph Kerr Middle School when he collapsed, according to a district spokesperson.

"Apparently, because of a leg cramp that was going on. The coaches went to their assistants and found that there was no pulse and immediately gave CPR and also called 9-1-1," said Xanthi Pinkerton, Director of Communications with the Elk Grove Unified School District. "The family is torn apart right now, and are kind of working through their grief right now."

Pinkerton said the student was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive.

A school employee, who wished to remain anonymous, told FOX40 the victim was 12-year-old Aaron Nguyen. Meanwhile, Pinkerton said the district will have a crisis response team on campus Monday morning.

"That team is comprised of psychologists, school psychologists, school councilors as well as mental health therapists who will be there," Pinkerton said.
