The 916 is getting a friend.

According to the California Public Utilities Commission, the 916 area code is expected run out of its available prefixes by the end of 2018.

Starting in June 2018, customers getting a new phone number might get the new area code.

CPUC will hold three public meetings in Sacramento, Folsom and Roseville on August 15 and 16 to hear concerns about the change:

    August 15 at 1 p.m.
Sacramento Historic City Hall, 915 I Street
    Hearing Room, Second Floor
    August 15 at 6 p.m.
Folsom Community Center, 52 Natoma Street
    Activity Room
    August 16 at 1 p.m.
Roseville Civic Center, 311 Vernon Street
    Meeting Rooms 1 & 2

Phone numbers that already have the 916 prefix will remain unchanged, according to CPUC.
