FALLBROOK, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say the small plane that crashed into a car on a Southern California freeway killed a female passenger in the vehicle and seriously injured the pilot.

California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent says the pilot and his passenger each suffered major injuries in the crash Saturday morning on Interstate 15.

Fire department spokesman John Buchanan says witnesses reported that the plane crash-landed on its belly and plowed into the trunk of a Nissan Altima stopped on the side of the highway about 50 miles north of San Diego.

A woman in the back of the car died at the scene. The car’s driver and two other passengers were expected to survive their injuries.

Buchanan says the impact of the crash nearly pushed the rear bumper all the way into the back passenger area.
