AUBURN --

Two teen boys were hit and killed by a pickup truck driving along southbound Highway 49 in Auburn on Sunday evening. The driver of the truck has been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Three teens were walking on the right shoulder of the roadway with scooters and bicycles. For an unknown reason the driver of the pickup swerved onto the shoulder and hit two of the three teens near Shale Ridge Road about 5:15 p.m., Officer David Martinez with the CHP Auburn office said.

One of the boys died at the scene. The other was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

The third boy was not injured.

The two victims were 15 years old.

The driver has been identified by the CHP as 62-year-old Philip Ingram of Auburn. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Martinez said.

Ingram was also involved in another vehicle crash earlier Sunday, the CHP said. The circumstances of that crash are not known.

One lane of southbound Highway 49 is closed.
