Twelve people are looking for a new place to stay after two fires tore through a Stockton triplex Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
Resident Chhoun Proeung said the first fire saved her and her kids from death.
"I wasn't home for the first fire. I was driving my kids around and I was told the house caught fire," she said. "The fire department said we couldn't stay here, so we spent the night at family's. Then we got the call the house was on fire again, and my mom is in the hospital."
Proeung's mother lived at the other end of the triplex for more than 20 years. She fell early Thursday morning and was taken to the hospital. She is expected to be OK.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Proeung says the first fire started on or near the stove. The second, investigators say, was likely a flare up.
