TRACY -- Northbound Interstate 5 in Tracy was shut down Tuesday because of a sinkhole in the road just south of State Route 33.

According to the CHP, the hole is three to four feet wide and at least 15 feet deep. Caltrans said the sinkhole was discovered about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Caltrans construction crews are investigating the cause and making plans for repairs.

Traffic is being  diverted off the freeway at Highway 132.

With crews working around the clock, Caltrans anticipates having the closed section of I-5 reopened by Thursday afternoon.

Detour info:
Northbound I-5 is closed at State Route 132. Drivers are being directed to take eastbound State Route 132 then northbound State Route 33 and that will take drivers back to northbound I-5.
