STOCKTON -- Dried up pepper spray on April Richmond’s window screen -- it’s the only evidence left of what she calls a rude awakening,

"Were we attacked? ... Just a weird way to wake up,” Richmond said.

Richmond said she, her young daughters and her 88-year-old grandmother were sleeping and left the windows open because of the heat on Bonnie Lane around 1 a.m. Saturday.

That's when someone shot what she believes was pepper spray onto the window screen and on her fence.

"The gate was completely saturated because (pepper spray) went into this window as well, so kinda crazy,” she said.

Neighbors FOX40 spoke with off camera were startled because this is the first they’ve heard of anyone using pepper spray on a sleeping family. While the block is mostly quiet, a neighbor pointed out screws in the alley that used to hold lights. Many believe they were stolen.

As for Richmond, she’s flabbergasted.

"I don’t know what they were doing over here or what they thought they were going to get, but they were here."

She also now sleeps with the windows closed to keep her family safe.

"Close everything. Which is not comfortable at night when it’s hot, but we’ve taken some precautions just for our own safety, it’s not worth it,” she said.

Richmond filed a report with the Stockton Police Department.
