STANISLAUS COUNTY -- Rick Applegate’s mugshot provides a sobering view of a Stanislaus County educator moments after he was arrested for suspected DUI.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said the now former Hughson Unified School board member was arrested late Friday night. Applegate is also a former Modesto Police Department sergeant and public information officer.

On Tuesday, he was taken off the school district’s website. The district said he resigned from his position just 24 hours before. Superintendent Brian Beck emailed us a statement that reads:

"It is really a tragedy that things have played out this way for Mr. Applegate. Prior to his current medical issues, he has provided an impeccable body of work as a trustee for the past decade."

According to reports, Applegate had been convicted of a DUI just a year ago in Tuolumne County, while he was still a board trustee.

"His work and insight, along with our other trustees and incredible staff, has helped lead our district to greatness in student achievement and employee compensation,” Beck said.

Parents FOX40 spoke to are concerned about the district’s future, while the superintendent ended his statement with “(Applegate’s) leadership will be sorely missed.”

FOX40 also reached out to Applegate, but he had not replied as of Tuesday evening.
