SACRAMENTO -- Sean Thompson, sitting in jail with cuts on his face, explained behind the glass why he assaulted Mayor Kevin Johnson with a coconut cream pie at a charity dinner.

Thompson is an activist with Occupy Sacramento, but Wednesday night he says he acted alone, claiming his years of peaceful protests weren't effective enough.

"I feel like it needed to happen. It needed to happen to him, and I wasn't going to get another opportunity," he said, adding, "I decided to escalate it this time, so if you think a cream pie to the face is an act of violence, then that's your interpretation. I think it was a very soft version of what he deserved."

Thompson wishes the mayor would focus on creating jobs and helping the homeless. Knowing he has just a few months left in office, Thompson chose a charity dinner at Sacramento Charter School to slam a pie in the Mayor's face.

"The only words exchanged between us were when I threw the pie in his face, and I said, 'You need to better represent your people,'" Thompson explained. "And he looked me in the eye when I said that."

The Mayor fought back. Thompson says Mayor Johnson punched him in the eye at least twice and he has bruises and nine stitches to prove it.

Sacramento magazine photographer Philippe Ngabonziza snapped photos of the altercation.

Thompson says it was worth it.

When FOX40 asked if he would do it again, Thompson replied, "Absolutely, I'd do it twice."

Thompson is facing a felony charge for assaulting a public official and a misdemeanor for battery on school property.

He's scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday at 1:30pm.
