CERES -- There are a lot of reasons Mariah Mercer could sit this game out. The most obvious is that she can't walk.

Mercer has spina bifida, a birth defect that caused nerve damage and has confined her to her bright pink wheelchair.

Despite her disadvantage, Mercer is defying the odds and and redefining what it means to stand on her own two feet. This year, she earned a spot on the Ceres High School varsity cheerleading squad, and played on the powderpuff football game.

"I love just being out there and people seeing that I'm actually doing it," she told FOX40.

Mercer's parents have been with her all the way, encouraging her to take an honest shot at her dreams.
