SACRAMENTO -- Grant Union High School's drumline is headed overseas on a five-day adventure to Japan.

After months of successful fundraising for the trip, the students, teachers and chaperones boarded a bus Wednesday evening that took them from the high school in Sacramento to the San Francisco airport.

The percussion students, under the direction of James Van Buren ("Mr. V"), were invited to perform as part of the 35th anniversary of the sister city agreement between Sacramento and Matsuyama Japan, and the 10th anniversary of Grant's sister high school in that city.

The group returns Oct. 17.

Grant's drumline is also preparing to release an educational CD called "50 States."
