ANGELS CAMP -- A message written in black marker on a Calaveras County "No on Measure D" sign warns would-be criminals that it's illegal to vandalize campaign signs just days after investigators said eight of the red posts were swiped.

"I think it’s just ridiculous that the political discourse has come down to throw your signs,” Martin De Anda of Angels Camp said.

“Just let the signs stay where they are. It’s like kind of a free market sort of idea. I like free market,” Mike Darby of Angels Camp said.

Voters FOX40 spoke to said the measure has sparked debate and controversy.

“Strong feelings on this marijuana issue,” Darby said.

Investigators said the signs were stolen sometime this past weekend from Main Street and State Route 4 and just down the road on Main Street and Mark Twain Road, all in Angels Camp.

The Angels Camp police department said the signs are about $90 each, and if you’re caught stealing one you could be arrested.

If passed, proponents claim Measure D would enforce strong regulation of marijuana cultivation in Calaveras County. While those who oppose argue the measure would lead to full-scale legalization and fear grow sites and dispensaries will be on every corner.

Voters said that regardless of which side you’re on, to decide with your ballot not with theft.

“Just sinking to the lowest level. We don’t have to do at the local level what we’re seeing at the national level,” De Anda said.

The police department is urging anyone with information about these stolen signs to contact them at (209) 736-2567 or (209) 754-6500. Anyone who sees a crime in progress please call 911.
