FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A teenager who was raped on her journey from Mexico to the United States has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for killing her newborn.

The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/2dN0jLN ) that now-19-year-old Gloria Santos Mendoza left Mexico to live with her brother illegally in Madera. She arrived in the Northern California city days before giving birth.

Mendoza arrived at the hospital in 2014 with postpartum bleeding and authorities later found the newborn girl’s body stuffed under the bathroom sink in her brother’s home. Madera County District Attorney David Linn says the baby was stabbed to death.

Linn says Mendoza became pregnant when she was raped before crossing the border in Tijuana. He says prosecutors gave Mendoza less jail time because of her age and traumatic experience.
