SONORA -- The California Highway Patrol is asking for help in solving a hit-and-run that killed three people in rural Tuolumne County.

Officers believe the suspect vehicle may have been spotted by other drivers or surveillance in the area.

Tuesday night, hundreds gathered at the Don Pedro Market near La Grange for a vigil for 16-year-old Trista Hoffman and her mother Tina Hoffman.

"I mean, she was just the sweetest person. If she saw somebody by themselves she would go over there and make sure they didn't feel left out," said Trista's friend Holly Gentes.

Delia Doirin works at Don Pedro Market and said the mother and daughter had been coming in to the only store for miles for years, a gathering point for an area where every neighbor knows everyone.

Doirin said Tina Hoffman was a big part of this small community.

"She managed the little league team, did the local notaries up here," Doirin told FOX40.

Friday afternoon the person responsible for their deaths didn't even bother to stop after forcing them off the highway near La Grange and Bond Flat roads.

"That vehicle passed over double yellow lines, coming at (the Hoffmans') Lexus SUV, forcing them off the road," said CHP Officer Joelle McChesney, with the CHP's Sonora Division.

That crash left three dead, including the mother and daughter, as well as Rheinholt Eisemann, a passenger in a third car involved, the one the suspect's vehicle was trying to illegally pass.

Two others were sent to the hospital, the younger Hoffman's brother, Dillon Hoffman, and friend Annie Johnson. The CHP wants to know who was behind the wheel of the vehicle that caused the wreck, a car they have no description of.

"So we would like to hear from anybody who might have been in that area," McChesney told FOX40.

If you or anyone you know may have been driving through the area of La Grange Road and Bonds Flat Road around 4:20 p.m. on Friday afternoon, please contact the Sonora Area CHP Office at (209)984-3944 or Officer Faustino Pulido (916) 634-3502.
