BUTTE COUNTY -- Employees with the Contractors State License Board have been going to each property lost in the Wall Fire in Butte County to warn homeowners about hiring unlicensed contractors.

Signs with information about possible scammers were placed in front of the 41 homes burned in the fire.

"The last thing we want is to have these unlicensed our unscrupulous contractors to hit upon them (property owners) and take advantage of their low emotional state right now," said CSLB spokesperson Rick Lopes.

Lopes told FOX40 that state law allows non-licensed contractors to take bids under $500, which includes parts and labor costs -- clearly not enough for a home rebuild.

"All licensed contractors will have a contractors license number that can be verified on the board's website," Lopes added.

Those effected by the fire looking for any additional information can visit the Oroville Municipal Auditorium Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday will be the last day the information center will be open.
