SAN DIEGO (AP) — The FAA says a plane crashed near El Capitan Reservoir in San Diego County but the fate of those aboard was unknown.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that an FAA spokesman said the agency was told a small plane with two people aboard was reported missing Saturday after it left Gillespie Field in El Cajon. The crash started a brush fire that grew to at least 20 acres by nightfall, and U.S. Forest Service firefighters battled the flames.

The newspaper reported that authorities were not able to confirm until evening that charred debris at the north end of the reservoir was the plane’s wreckage. No survivors were found.
