Hearing Postponed for Man Arrested in Connection to CHP Officer’s Death

SACRAMENTO -- The man arrested in connection to the death of a South Sacramento CHP officer will learn his fate next month.

Alberto quiroz was scheduled to be sentenced Friday, but after a brief court appearance the hearing was postponed.

Quiroz was arrested back in February. Investigators say CHP Officer Lucas Chellew was chasing Quiroz down Fruitridge Road in South Sacramento when Chellew lost control of his motorcycle and hit a pole.

Officer Chellew, a CHP veteran, was killed.

CHP officers packed the courtroom Friday to support the fallen officer and his family.

"What we're looking for is just closure, that we support our officer and that that suspect, who unfortunately made a decision and took someone's life, will be put away," said Michael Bradley of CHP South Sacramento.

Quiroz will be sentenced on Jan. 26. The CHP says officers will be back in court to support the family.
