ORANGEVALE -- If it's true that good friends are the measure of a good life, then David Karlin lived a very good life indeed.

"David might have been 23 years old, but man, he lived his life like he's been on this planet for 90 years," said Karlin's friend Jake Samios.

Those closest to Karlin say the former Casa Roble football player and Sacramento State student was killed in what amounted to a freak accident. While snowboarding at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Dec. 7, Karlin crashed into a fence pole.

"This kid impacted a lot of people, and it shows tonight," said friend Tim Powers.

Scores of friends and family, former coaches and grieving classmates packed the pavilion at Orangevale Park Saturday to swap fond stories about Karlin.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help pay for Karlin's medical and memorial expenses.
