Detectives say hikers found the skeletal remains along Foresthill Road between Upper and Lower Lake Clementine Roads. The bones were in an area of thick underbrush just a few hundred feet north of the road.
"Yeah, that's pretty crazy," said local hiker Ramiro Navarro. "Because everybody feels so safe coming through this area. Just to hike through and to expect to see something like that would probably ruin their day."
At this time the body has not been identified and it is not known how the person died.
"We can't tell what the cause of death was," said Placer County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Scott. "It could have been accidental, it could have been natural causes, or it could have been something more serious."
It is unclear how long the body has been at the location.
Volunteer crews scoured the location Sunday for any additional evidence.
