Firefighters Respond to Fire at Rancho Cordova Apartments

RANCHO CORDOVA -- Metro crews are still searching for the cause of a fire that started in a downstairs unit at The Redwoods at Mather Station in Rancho Cordova.

As the flames raged and no one knew how far they would spread, neighbors tried to save each other.

"I started banging on everybody's door, 'You gotta get out,'" said Jarreal Miller.

The flames were contained to two units.

Fire investigators have ruled out arson.

Keith Merritt lives in the apartment where the flames appear to have sparked. When asked if any of his belongings appeared salvageable he said, "doesn't look like it." Merritt lost four dogs in the fire.

No injuries were reported.
