PLACER COUNTY -- Roseville Fire says one person has died in a house fire in the Morgan Creek Gated Community of Placer County.

The home after the explosion and fire.

Neighbors on the quiet, tree-lined street were shaken after the deadly explosion.

"We heard a loud noise," said neighbor Yatish Goel. "It was a big thud kind of thing. So first I thought it was construction going on but then I heard all the sirens."

Goel stepped outside Tuesday morning to see firefighters and a plume of smoke billowing from a home down the block.

Goel also said some neighbors tried to save the person inside before crews arrived.

"They pulled a person out," Goel recalled. "He wasn't looking good."

Placer County Sheriff's investigators say one person was killed in the explosion that sparked a fire in the garage.

Thursday morning, the sheriff's department identified the man as 48-year-old Kevin Jon Hourigan.

A teenage girl was sent to the hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the blast.

"We haven't even determined it's a crime," said Lt. Andrew Scott. "It could be completely accidental. It could be intentional but we're so early in the investigation we can't determine that."

Crime scene tape and fire crews blocked off the residential street for hours.

"This is life (the) first time we've had this kind of police and firefighter presence. I have never seen (it)," Goel said.

Neighbors remained shocked as emotional family and friends showed up to the scene.

"It's obviously a very traumatic scene for them and there's a lot of emotion involved," Scott said. "So we're just giving them their space at this time."

The sheriff's department has not identified the victim as of now. They cannot even say if they were a man or a woman.

Later in the day, investigators were seen taking several firearms from the home.
