SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting near 21st Street and Broadway.
The coroner's office identified the suspect who was shot to death by two officers as Darell Richards, 19.
Around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities got a call about an armed man wearing a mask and black hooded sweatshirt in the area of Broadway and 16th Street.
The police department reports the original caller said the man was pointing a gun at several people while walking down Broadway. A CHP airplane confirmed the man was carrying something.
Sgt. Vance Chandler with the Sacramento Police Department says the suspect jumped over the fence of a home on 20th Street. Richards ran from a police officer again when he was told to show his hands.
"He said, 'Go back into your house. There’s an armed person in the neighborhood. If you see anybody in your backyard, call 911,'" said Curtis Park resident Anthony Chiaramonte.
When Richards hopped another fence, officers monitored him from a patrol vehicle. Officers established a perimeter around several blocks.
Sgt. Chandler says SWAT teams were called to the scene around 12:45 a.m. and they took over the main search for Richards.
Around 3 a.m., K-9s and SWAT officers found Richards hiding under stairs in the backyard of a home.
When SWAT officers made contact, Richards refused to drop his gun and pointed it at them, according to the police department. Two SWAT officers fired their weapons.
The police department reports officers performed CPR until the Sacramento Fire Department took over and pronounced Richards dead at the scene.
"When they located the suspect, the suspect posed an immediate threat to the officers and two SWAT officers fired their weapons at the suspect," Chandler said. "What we do know right now is the suspect is deceased."
A knife and pellet gun were found on Richards, the police department said in Thursday's report. The pellet gun was a replica of a Sig Sauer P225 9 mm handgun.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Both officers who shot at Richards have been with the department for more than 10 years.
There was a heavy police presence in the area and several streets between Larkin Way and Broadway were blocked off on 21st Street. The streets were expected to be closed most of the day while the investigation continued.
