RANCHO CORDOVA -- An early Monday morning house fire in Rancho Cordova took the lives of two family pets and injured three people, according to Sacramento Metro Fire officials.

The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. at a home along La Rule Way near White Rock Road, according to officials.

Three adults made it out of the home safely and were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, but a dog and a cat died inside, according to investigators.

"The front of the house appears to be the port of origin, again, they're investigating that right now. But we did have extension through a couple of the common areas," said Sacramento Metro Fire Battalion Chief Jason Vestal.

It was not immediately clear what started the fire but firefighters said the blaze did not spread throughout the entire property and they were able to put out the flames within 15 minutes.

Firefighters noticed that the bedroom doors were closed and said that might have saved the rest of the home from burning.

"If you can compartmentalize your living space, that prevents airflow and fire spread, especially at night when people are sleeping and they’re not going to be as alert to a fire," sVestal said. "Yeah, close the door, keep the spread of the fire, keep the smoke out."

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire but said there is nothing suspicious at this point.
