(KTXL) — A man allegedly shot a California Highway Patrol officer and two adult hostages near Mahany Park in Roseville April 6 before being detained by law enforcement.

One of the adults died at the scene, and the other adult, as well as the officer and the suspect, were hospitalized, according to Roseville Police and CHP officials.  

The CHP said the suspect was injured in the shooting with a gunshot wound and was taken to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Details about the suspect’s condition were not provided.

Suspect and Victim Identification

On Friday, the Roseville Police Department identified Eric J. Abril, 35, of Roseville as the suspect in the Thursday afternoon shooting.

The victim that was is reported to have been fatally shot by Abril is James MacEgan of Roseville. The second victim is reported to be his spouse.

Report of CHP officer shot

In a press conference, Roseville Police Capt. Kelby Newton said the department and other agencies responded around 12:30 p.m. after hearing over their dispatch radios of a CHP officer shot near Mahany Park.

Newton said the CHP was serving a warrant against the Abril at that time. When CHP was asked about the warrant, a spokesperson with the agency only said that the investigation is still open. 

The officers attempted to contact Abril, which at the time he allegedly fled on foot, and fired at officers, striking one CHP officer, according to the CHP.

A witness that spoke with FOX40 News said he was at a nearby ballfield when he saw several officers with their guns drawn yelling at a “young man” to get down.

“He turned around, I think I saw a gun flash, and the cops just opened up on him. It was very scary for these kids. There were bullets flying,” the witness said.

Suspect takes two adult hostages

Officials said that the Abril ran from arriving officers and took two MacEgan and his spouse as hostages near the greenbelt area of Mahany Park.

Officials also said that MacEgan and his spouse were injured by “gunfire from the suspect’s firearm.”

One hostage killed, other hostage hospitalized

The two MacEgan and his spouse that were taken hostage were shot, and MacEgan was later pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital. 

California Highway Patrol officer shot

In a press release Friday, the CHP said officers were in the area to serve a search warrant on the suspect for an ongoing felony investigation.

CHP Spokesperson Ricardo Ortiz said he doesn’t know at which point the CHP officer was shot and doesn’t know how many officers were on the scene.

According to Roseville Police, the CHP officer who was shot was taken to the fire station located in Mahany Park and given first aid by firefighters.

The CHP said its officer is was treated for their injuries at the Sutter Roseville Medical Center and is expected to recover.

Roseville police said its conducting an investigation into the events that occurred after the shooting while the CHP is conducting an administrative investigation regarding the incident.

Shooting causes lockdowns, cancellations of events

The shooting caused nearby Woodcreek High School to be placed in lockdown, according to the Roseville Joint Unified School District. Classes were not in session, but some people were on campus at the time.

Roseville police said the people that were near the high school were asked to shelter in place. 

Local camps were taking place at Riley Library and everyone there was also sheltering in place. Roseville police said about 33 children were attending spring break camps and no organized outdoor activities were happening near police activity.

Kids from the camps were reunited with their parents at Quail Glenn Elementary School, police said.

The shooting also caused games at nearby athletic facilities to be canceled.

According to Roseville Parks and Recreation, the Mahany Fitness Center, Roseville Aquatics Complex and Riley Library were closed for the rest of the day. 

The softball and baseball fields and the dog park will be closed April 7 while the Roseville camps will continue that day.

Roseville Transit Commuter routes were also affected in the area that serves Mahany Park. Officials said routes will stop at Woodcreek High School on April 7.
