Each year a number of private nonprofit family and child services organizations come together and lead a vigil on the North Steps of the State Capitol to bring awareness of the tens of thousands of California children waiting in foster care for permanent families.

This year’s “Calling Out of Names of Children Who Wait” is scheduled for Thursday November 19.

The 5 hour vigil 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes reading the first names and ages of many of the almost 40,000 California children who are growing up in foster care without a mom or dad. Guests Vanessa Hernandez — a former foster youth and Statewide Legislative Coordinator for California Youth Connections — and Gail Johnson Vaughan from Families NOW are in the studio talking to Mae about how to help foster youth in our area.
