John Hutchinson from Red Rocket Auto Tech is in the studio with Paul today to answer a viewer's question.

My air conditioner works in the morning. But it does not work in the afternoon. What would cause this and is it expensive to fix? - Dave

When air conditioning seems to operate differently at different times of the day, it normally points to one of three things:

  • Failing electrical relay - internal circuit board overheats when extra hot ($100)
  • Slightly low on refrigerant - system must work harder when temp is the hottest ($100-150)
  • Condenser fan malfunction (fan clutch, fan motor) - symptom: works best when on freeway, not good in city traffic. ($150-300)

Don't fall victim to expensive repairs in this scenario. Since the AC works in the morning, a system overhaul is excessive. Only a minor correction is needed.
