12-Hour Standoff Ends with 80-year-old Shot by Officers

Nearly 12 hours after it started, a standoff in Modesto is over; an elderly man is dead and a woman rescued.

Tuesday evening, a man in his 80’s barricaded himself inside a home with an elderly woman.

The couple, both in their 80’s, have some sort of relationship according to investigators.

Officers and SWAT members tried to talk to the man, who was believed to be armed, all night.

The woman inside the home has a severe medical condition, and early Wednesday morning, officers became aware her health may be deteriorating. Meanwhile, the man became more hostile to officers and threatened to burn the home down.

Officers decided to go inside the home to rescue the woman. As they tried to get her out, the man approached them with a handgun.

According to police, officers opened fire, and the man died.

The woman was taken to the hospital to be checked out. At the home, investigators are gathering information and evidence of the standoff and the shooting.
