One of the world’s premier bicycle races will start in Sacramento on May 11.
The 8 day race in 12 host cities is a sought after event from many California communities. The announcement was made in Sacramento, which has not hosted a tour stage race in three years.
Business leaders and local elected officials were at the announcement, which also revealed that Folsom would host the time trials the next day. The event will cost the community and business sponsors around $400,000 in cash and services, but members of the Sacramento Sports Commission, a part of the convention and visitors bureau, say it is well worth the expense.
They estimate that the event will draw 65 to 70 thousand spectators, 2,700 hotel room nights and $8.5 million in economic activity. They also say the international event will focus attention to the area and in the long run help retain workers businesses and attract new high quality residents to the area.
