The main entrance into Beale Air Force Base housing has been closed all Sunday after the body of an adult man was found.

About 200 yards from Vassar Lake Gate, a passerby found the body of an adult male lying outside a vehicle just off the road.

“It is not odd to see a vehicle parked out there, but obviously a death so close to Beale Air Force base is definitely out of the norm,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Brian Wagner.

Authorities have had the road blocked off since 1 p.m. this afternoon to conduct their investigation. They have not said how the man died, but he was found with a gunshot wound and a gun on him.

“Right now it looks non-suspicious. There was a gunshot wound, but we will let the actual investigation play out to see what the actual cause was,” said Wagner

At this point in the investigation, authorities do not believe the man was connected to the base.

Several agencies, including the Wheatland Police Department and Yuba County Sheriff’s office, are assisting the scene – although the investigation is now being led by the Air Force Office of Special Investigation.

“Why did this person come to this location? Why did they pick a gated Beale Air Force Base? We are not sure at this time, but obviously that is what the Air Force Office of Special Investigations will work to find out,” said Wagner.

Traffic into Beale is being diverted to four other entrances.

Authorities expect Vassar Lake Gate to reopen by tomorrow morning.
