Missing Yosemite hiker Kenneth Stensby

Park Rangers found the body of a missing hiker Monday evening near the base of Vernal Fall in the Yosemite National Park.

Kenneth Stensby, 73, is said to have been fatally injured by a fall from a cliff near the top of the falls. His body was recovered early Tuesday afternoon after search crews were able to get to it.

Stensby hadn’t been seen since May 5, when he told the concierge at the Ahwahnee Hotel that he was planning to hike to the top of the Vernal Fall on the Mist Trail. Stensby, from Minnesota, regularly told the hotel desk what his plans for the day were.

Hotel staff tried to contact Stensby that afternoon after realizing he had not returned from his hike.

His backpack was found by the guard rail at the top of Vernal Fall that evening.

The Mist Trail was closed while search parties looked for Stensby. It’s now been reopened.
